Town’s top rock pub and venue plumps for open mic maestro

The pub formerly known as the Queens Arms (before it changed to Noctor’s and then Nikki’s Bar) is currently trading under the temporary moniker of ‘The Pub with No Name’ until an official launch and ‘opening’ later in August 2013.

Whatever you call it, however, the bar (pictured) is widely considered to be the best music pub venue in town, with live acts appearing at least four nights every week and one of those nights will be Mechkov’s latest sojourn into the world of open mics.

“We are planning a whole raft of renovations for the pub,” said the establishment’s landlady, Peggy Smith – who also runs The Rose pub on the other side of the town. “Rather than waiting for the refurbishments to be finished before we start sorting out the clientele and activities for the pub, we have decided to get both underway at the same time.

“This means that when we are ready for the official launch, the pub will already be thriving.

“We have Irish music on Sundays, bands on Fridays. karaoke on Saturdays, salsa dancing on Thursdays and, of course, open mic on Tuesdays. We want to make this the music pub in town.”

For his part, Mechkov is delighted. “Since the landlord of The Plough in Stoke Poges called a halt to the open mic there – just as it was gaining something of a tradition and a critical mass of musicians – I was determined to do two things: First, I wanted to start a second open mic night to run alongside my more established one in Maidenhead aand seoncd, this time I wanted it to be in a town centre.

“While I still believe that the Stoke Poges evening could have been a success given the right landlord, it was always going top be tough as there is never any passing trade at a village pub. No-one goes to Stoke Poges by accident and pops into the pub.

“With Peggy’s new tenancy being smack bang in the middle of a big town, I know that I can make this into a long-standing tradition, like the O’Donoghues evening in Marlow.”

The new open mic night will take place every Tuesday starting tomorrow (July 9th) at 8:30pm until at least 11:30.
