Mechkov in rehearsals with new band

Hendrix and Cream to form basis of combo’s set

No, this is not an April Fool’s Day hoax, it is the real thing.

Yes, Mechkov’s apparent inactivity over the past few months has been because of the gradual formation of a new band, Custard Cream, brought together to fulfil one of Mechkov’s long-held ambitions to have a group of guitarists (and a drummer, of course) that are centred around rock improvisations.

A cover band, Custard Cream will base its repertoire on the music of Cream, Jimi Hendrix, ZZ Top, Gary Moore and other classic rock power trios (and quartets!), with the emphasis on, as Mechkov puts it, ‘going off on one’.

“It’s an exciting project for me and something I have always wanted to do,” he said. “Amazingly, the whole thing came to me, rather than the other way around.

“Nigel Owst (one of the two guitarists) moved from Cornwall up to Berkshire, a few miles from where I live and wanted to keep the band he had down south going. His lifelong pal, George Skinn – the other guitarist – was commuting down from Yorkshire, so this was a better place for him to come to.

“After one initial problem, things came together and the band was a dead cert.”

The band was hoping to be gigging by March, but that ‘initial problem’ was that the first drummer the band hired who wasn’t up to the standard of the other three, but was given the chance to prove himself. This, Mechkov explained, never happened and so the stick duties were handed over to Angus Lyon.

“The moment Angus joined us, the chemistry was just right and rehearsals have been a dream. We’re just champing at the bit, now, to get in front of an audience.”

Custard Cream’s first gig will most likely be in Wokingham, early in May. Stay tuned for details.
